Who Is Anonymous

Good question one might just ask or be interested in knowing exactly just who is anonymous? And I am going to try and answer that question with some information. The word anonymous itself means a person that is not identified by name or their name is unknown. So ok we know from that definition that Anonymous is most likely a person but they don't want to give you there name just yet.
Recently in the past couple weeks in countries like Europe and other parts of the world arrest have been made to so called hackers. But then 9 times out of 10 the kid in their mothers basement the government arrested has dropped the charges on the anonymous arrested person.
Recently more websites appear to be defaced and getting a friendly distributed denail of service attack. Some of the attacks like the cia.gov ddos appear to happen on friday afternoons like right before everyone is about to go home for the weekend. And if you have been reading the internet some of the targets for an activist group are getting pretty inconsistant. Which makes the point that the goals of anonymous are pretty unknown. Attacking random websites without pattern for fun means that this group doesn't have any common goals for websites to take down expect the fact that they like taking websites down.

SOPAs Not Really Dead

A couple weeks ago the House of Representatives announced they were tabling SOPA the big power grab by Washington DC over the internet. This announcement made many people react like it was ok to relax now that the internet takeover had stalled. But the truth of the matter is this internet takeover fight is just beginning. And this power grab can make many tired of protesting and reading about all the new acronyms.
So what is next you might wounder hoping it will end soon enough. The senate still has PIPA (protect ip act) a duplicate of SOPA. And just because the House of Representatives has tabled SOPA don't be surprised if they rename this bill and dress it up.
Also the previous President in 2008 (Bush) signed a treaty called Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) which is meant to be more of a secretive treaty. The release of the text of this document (acta) has been hard to come by. Both Obama and the Bush White House refused to release text citing national security interest and that a freedom of information request was not sufficient to see the text. One should be aware ACTA has not been ratified by the Senate and House of Representative which is required to ratify a treaty.
And just before this weekend as everyone was heading home the fbi released posters claiming those look for privacy on the internet might be a terrorist. The poster has been added to this posting so that you can read it for yourself.

Anonymous Holiday Cheer

As they holidays start to go into full gear so do the anonymous donations. As we reported earlier many people in the Iowa area were getting there layaway payments made in full by anonymous secret santas. And the anonymous giving is not just for toys anymore this holiday season. Reports are now coming that peoples overdue utility bills are being paid off this season. Allowing things like the heat to stay on for some is a bigger present than anything else for some. It means people can have a warm place to stay throughout the winter. If the heat bills are not paid for some its a matter of life and death for some and not just a matter of a fun toy to play with. Many overdue water bills are being paid off as well by anonymous doners allowing people to have running water to drink and take a bath with for the first time in a while.

Torrent Downloads Now IP Track-able

A new website from youhavedownloaded.com displays information about torrent downloads from your ip address. Apparently every time you download a torrent file your ip address is logged with the trackers server software. The data on youhavedownloaded.com is a limited set of data from only one Russian torrent tracker service so if your not on there don't be surprised if your on another servers logs somewhere else. You can also click around on the website to see what other people are downloading over bit torrent and is linked to there ip address. The websites founders said that they created the site to raise awareness that even on Bit Torrent your still not anonymous and users should consider using a proxy or vpn solution to cover a certain amount of your tracks. The sites goal is also to encourage development into a more advanced more decentralized per 2 per tracker service taking technology from a service like bit coin and applying it to Bit Torrents model.

NDAA Upsets Anonymous

The cyber group nick named Anonymous and reportedly often hanging out at websites like 4chan.com is supposedly declaring cyber war on United States Government after passage of the National Defense Authorization Act. If you have not heard the NDAA is a bill passed through congress that has drawn sharp criticism basically for giving the executive branch broad new powers to detain indefinitely anyone including United States citizens on anything related to terrorism. The word terrorism was also left way to broad is part of the criticism of the bill now soon to be law. The group named Anonymous also points to how much of an over reach over power this is compared to the Obama health care law passed in Spring of 2010. The law denies United States citizens the right to a fair and speedy trial and institutes the closest thing to martial law the United States has seen since WWII when Japanese American Citizens were arrested and sent to government run camps.
How exactly Anonymous plans to accomplish there cyber war is another part entirely. Pulling off large scale attacks on the internet alone no matter the target is an even harder thing to pull off. The number of zombie computer systems to launch sophisticated denial of service attacks is not easy. Second you must know your target. Taking down a website like whitehouse.gov etc will not really do you much of a service all it will mean is Americans cant visit the web page of some government agency or department. Even if there were to launch an attack against a power plant or water treatment facility these are the types of systems that should not even be remotely controlled over the internet in the first place. The United States government heavy reliance on drone airplanes is one of the few possible risk that is 100 percent remotely controlled. But you still will need to know what to connect to and how to get in, gaining access should not be 1 2 3.
